October Baby: Designing for Good

“You saw me before I was born.” Psalm 139:16 (NLT)

As the curtain rises, Hannah hesitantly steps onto the stage for her theatrical debut in college. Yet before she can utter her first lines, Hannah—unscripted—collapses in front of the stunned audience…

So begins the movie, October Baby, a daring movie that not only marks my first movie poster design (so cool) but also a chance to do design promoting issues that I deeply care about.

That last word might stop you. Move something in you. Cause dividing lines of politics and faith, issues and debates. And you know what? It should because it’s life that we’re talking about. Human lives. I think it’s funny (in a very sad way) how we defend the lives of animals and want our cattle to have happy lives in grassy fields before turning into dinner meat but we (as in society) think that a unplanned or unwanted baby can be disgarded like a bruised banana or an ugly dress. I can just imagine my pregnant friends holding their bellies right now, feeling little kicks of life, imagining this alternative. It’s heartbreaking.

So this story… well I don’t want to give it all away but basically it’s about a girl who finds out that not only was she adopted, but that she was also a failed abortion attempt. Sounds crazy, right? Only there are people like her out in the non-Hollywood world just like that — babies found in dumpsters and clinic trash cans, still breathing…barely…hearts beating…little fingers wiggling…aborted babies who didn’t ever die. They LIVE! Bet some of you didn’t even know that was possible. Little lives not even given a chance until a nurse or someone passing by hears their breath or a tiny cry, scoops them up and gives them a second chance.

There is plenty people will start to argue about at this point. When life begins…a women’s rights…what if? what if? what if? I’m not here to change your mind, but I am here to challenge it. To challenge what you think about life. Hope. Choices. Love. Check out this real woman’s story of surviving an abortion attempt as a baby. Then check out this movie coming to theaters in March. It’s pretty amazing.
